Faculty Guidelines for Internet provision and use for Students & Interns.
Wireless
Internet is available in the communal areas within each residence for
General Browsing, Email, Research and uploading Photos
However,
there are some important points which prospective users should be made aware before they travel.
These
restrictions are summarized for users at http://advice.pogolink.com
Unfortunately
accommodation is in residential locations which do
not have the infrastructure to
Previously
we have observed around 5% of Students consuming 95% of available bandwidth, downloading
vast amounts of data (in excess of 1,000 gigabytes per month) resulting in an
unreliable and slow service for everyone else.
To
ensure everyone received a good service we have introduced new equipment to provide a fair distribution of bandwidth and usage quotas to everyone.
We hope this will discourage the prohibited activities listed below.
Users should consider using Pogolinks Low Cost Telephone service:
To save using bandwidth when using programs such as Skype (A video chat program), Pogolink operate a low cost, subsidised telephone service from each flats landline.
This service is exceptional value for money and considerably cheaper than call plans or calling cards purchased either before travel or from local shops.
Calls form cell phone are between 5 to 200 times more expensive.
To find out if this service is available from your building, please visit http://telephones.pogolink.com
WiFi Prohibited activity
(Legal or Illegal):-
WiFi Permissible activity:-
Video Skype, Video MSN
etc.
These
calls are not encouraged as they can
use a large amount of bandwidth which will use up a students bandwidth
allowance quickly but are permitted - Audio only services use far less bandwidth.
Special Circumstances
If
special arrangements are required for coursework (such as Video Assignments)
please submit a request to support@pogolink.com
Voucher system
If
your faculty subsidise Internet access, Students will be provided with a user account.
To activate their voucher they may be asked to pay a 2.50(GBP)
administration fee by Credit or Debit card to comply with European Regulations to provide an electronic audit trail to verified information - such as name and address.
These
regulations make it necessary to keep records to identify users of data
networks.
The
voucher, once activated, will allow the user 2,000 minutes access each week,
with a bandwidth allowance of 1,000 MB (each week), for the duration of their stay. Their
account will be automatically topped up each week (each Saturday morning).
Accounts can be used by only one person on a single computer, and should be keep safe as the user ID and Password will be requested to each time they logon.
If
a user exhausts their allowance and need to top up they can purchase one of the
options below from the welcome page. This is separate to their subsidised account.
Internet Access Student / Intern WiFi Purchase Options
As a guide the £10 / 6,000 minute option provides typical surfing and Instant Messaging for four hours each day plus 1,500 Emails and 200 attachments.
(We also provide an 'always connected' Smart-phone / iPhone / iPod service - for £5 per month - details on our login page). Reporting problems
Students
should contact Pogolink directly if they experience any problem with the service,
details of the information needed can be found at http://help.pogolink.com. This site can also
be accessed from most cell phones or alternative hotspots at each residence. This procedure allows us to gather the
necessary information directly from the resident for a quick resolution.
Reports
made via the Anglo American maintenance board is discouraged since it rarely
has the necessary information for a speedy resolution and only gets reviewed once a day.
